Standing on the summit of Seefin Mountain, the wind whispers secrets from the past. Before you, a towering mound of stones stands sentinel – Scurlocksleap, the “Leap of Scurlog.” Though it now sleeps, this ancient monument once held the power to connect the living and the dead.

This ancient tomb is a passage to the other world, a gateway to the world of the Sídhe, the mythical folk of Irish lore. The Seefin Passage Tomb, as it’s also known, is a testament to the ingenuity of the Neolithic people. They carefully crafted this elaborate tomb, with its narrow passageway and chamber, nearly 5,000 years ago.

The tomb’s interior is a labyrinth of spaces, with five recesses forming a cruciform pattern. Inside, you can almost imagine the flickering flames of a fire, illuminating the faces of mourners gathered around a long-forgotten burial. The tomb is silent now, but the faint echoes of voices from a bygone era still linger in the air.

During the excavation in 1931, archaeologists found no evidence of burials or artifacts. This led to the intriguing theory that the tomb might have been used for ceremonial purposes, perhaps for rituals designed to appease the otherworldly beings. Or perhaps, those who were laid to rest within its walls, have moved on, leaving the tomb to stand in silence.

One unique feature of Scurlocksleap, visible in the passageway, are the two decorated stones, etched with Neolithic art. Their shapes tell stories of the past, as lozenges and angled lines intertwine to form a strange, swirling pattern. The exact meaning of these markings remains a mystery, adding to the captivating allure of Scurlocksleap.

As you gaze upon this ancient monument, imagine the lives of those who built it, who walked this very path, who sought solace in this place of passage. They are gone now, but their legacy lives on in the stones of Seefin Passage Tomb.
