Across from the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center stands a peculiar sight. It’s the Scrap House Katrina Memorial Sculpture. This isn’t your typical statue. It’s a haunting yet beautiful testament to the resilience of New Orleans. The Scrap House was unveiled on August 29, 2009, the fourth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. It serves as a stark reminder of the devastation wrought by the storm. The sculpture depicts a battered shack nestled in the limbs of a tree. The porch light is askew. Mardi Gras beads hang from the eaves and gutters, placed there by visitors over the years. Artist Sally Heller created this unique memorial. She was inspired by the surreal images of boats in trees and houses on top of cars after the storm. The tree itself is a work of art, constructed from salvaged metal scraps from 55-gallon oil drums. It gives the impression of a metal monster hoisting the small house skyward. The Scrap House stands as a poignant symbol of loss and recovery, just across from the Convention Center where many refugees sought shelter in the storm’s aftermath.
