Scotstoun East whispers tales of vanished tracks and bustling platforms. This forgotten station, once a vital link in Glasgow’s transport network, served the Lanarkshire and Dumbartonshire Railway. Opened in 1896, Scotstoun East originally bore a different name: Victoria Park. This caused some confusion with the nearby Whiteinch Victoria Park station, operated by a rival railway company. In 1900, the station was renamed Scotstoun, only to become Scotstoun East in 1952 to distinguish it from Scotstoun West. Imagine the hustle and bustle of passengers on the island platform, perched on a raised embankment. Below them, the Whiteinch Tramway clanged along its route. The station building, typical of the railway line, stood proudly. A signal box, essential for controlling the flow of trains, operated at the east end of the station, south of the tracks. Scotstoun East wasn’t just a passenger station. A goods yard to the south, accessible via the Clydeside Tramway, handled the flow of goods from Scotstoun West and Partick West. This vital hub connected businesses and industries along the Clyde. The station’s signal box closed in 1951, a sign of the changing times. Passenger services ceased in 1964, silencing the platforms. The line, reduced to a single track, continued to serve goods traffic until 1980, when the last train rumbled past. Today, Scotstoun East is a ghost of its former self. The tracks are gone, the platforms vanished. But the echoes of its past remain, whispering tales of a time when steam trains and bustling commuters defined this corner of Glasgow.
