The SCL Building, also known as Siam Commercial Bank Park Plaza, stands as a testament to modern architecture in Bangkok’s Chatuchak District. Completed in 1996, this complex isn’t just a building; it’s a mini-city, occupying over 8 hectares. The SCL Building was the brainchild of American architect Robert G. Boughey. He envisioned a space that seamlessly blended functionality with aesthetics. The complex boasts a unique triangular grid system, evident in its floor plans and the striking golden pyramidal roof of the main tower. The design also prioritized energy efficiency, incorporating intelligent systems, a forward-thinking feature for its time. Beyond its architectural marvels, the SCL Building has a rich history. It has served as the headquarters for Siam Commercial Bank and housed offices for various corporations, including Unilever Thailand. The retail podium bustles with shops and restaurants, making it a popular hub for locals and visitors alike. However, the SCL Building has also seen its share of tragedy. In 2015, a fire engulfed three floors, claiming the life of a firefighter. A year later, a chemical accident during maintenance of the fire suppression system tragically killed eight people in the basement. Today, the SCL Building continues to be a prominent landmark in Bangkok, a symbol of innovation and resilience.
