The Science Center Wald opened in November 2012. It’s part of a larger complex. The Wu00e4lderhaus itself is a marvel of architecture. Built for 17 million Euros it boasts a striking larch wood facade. Notice how the building itself reflects the theme of wood and sustainability. It houses a hotel and a restaurant too.
Inside the Science Center Wald awaits an incredible experience. Explore 80 interactive stations. Examine 32 tree trunks. Marvel at 40 preserved animals. Learn how forests affect the environment and our lives. The exhibit highlights the connection between forests urban spaces and the importance of sustainable living.
This wasn’t always the plan. The Science Center’s original location was in Niendorfer Gehege. However a citizen’s initiative stopped that. Thankfully the International Building Exhibition Hamburg 2013 and the International Garden Show 2013 made this Wilhelmsburg location possible. Architect Andreas Heller created this unique building. He incorporated sustainable building practices. The Wu00e4lderhaus is the first building of its kind constructed using solid timber. It even features a green roof teeming with plants and animals.
