Craving a glimpse into Denver’s dedication to scientific advancement? Right here stands the Science Building. It is more than just a structure. The Science Building is a hub of learning and discovery.
This building isn’t just for one school. The Science Building serves three institutions. These are the University of Colorado Denver, Metropolitan State University, and the Community College of Denver. This makes it a unique shared resource.
Back in 2009, the Science Building underwent significant changes. An 181000-square-foot addition was constructed. A 143000-square-foot renovation followed in 2011. The goal was to create state-of-the-art spaces. These spaces would support teaching, research, and scientific disciplines.
AMD Architects played a crucial role in this project. They worked closely with 14 departments. Their aim was to understand each department’s specific needs. Through careful planning, they created a building that optimizes efficiency. It provides shared program opportunities for all institutions.
The Science Building has received accolades for its design. In 2012, it won the Citation Award from the American Institute of Architects, Colorado Chapter. It also received the 2010 Downtown Denver Award from the Downtown Denver Partnership. These awards recognize its contribution to the campus.
One striking feature is its multi-story glazed corner. It acts as an architectural marker. This provides program spaces with sweeping city views. Storefront glazing on the ground level reveals the activity inside.
The renovation also focused on sustainability. The Science Building achieved LEED Gold certification. BCER developed the Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Design Narrative. They incorporated the New Construction Version 2.2 LEED Application Guide for Laboratories.
Moreover, the facility houses departments of Chemistry, Biology, and Physics. The Science Building creates a rich scientific education. It also facilitates cutting-edge research for all three institutions.
