Researchers can submit proposals for runtime via a 3-5 page whitepaper, usually due in December. The scientific council reviews these papers and allocates machine time based on ranking.
Experiments typically start on Mondays. Users can request items to be pumped down before their experiment begins. The Science and Technology Research Building staff try to honor these requests. Users must remove their equipment by 9 am the following business day.

Machine safety is also critical in the Science and Technology Research Building. Users cannot work on the vacuum system of the LAPD. Only staff can move the small LaB6 cathode. Extreme caution is required near vacuum windows. Metal objects are prohibited near magnet connections and bus bars.
