How about this? A small wooden house, almost a fairytale cottage, stands before you. This is the Schwedenkirche. It is Greifswald’s smallest church. But it has a big heart and an interesting story.

The Schwedenkirche wasn’t originally intended to be a church at all. The Swedish Countess Hamilton gifted it as a wooden house to the Bishop of Scheven. It was a birthday present. In 1955, this special house found its place here on Klaus-Groth-Straße. It was on the edge of Greifswald back then.

The Stadtrandsiedlung Greifswald began in the 1930s. More and more single-family homes popped up. People belonging to the Protestant church needed a place to gather. So, the wooden house became the Schwedenkirche.

Imagine the first gatherings within those walls. Before the Schwedenkirche existed, people met in each other’s houses. Soon, they wanted their own dedicated space for worship and community. The Schwedenkirche became that space.

The Schwedenkirche quickly became a hub for all ages. It is the smallest church in Greifswald, but its impact was significant. In 1961, a small reed organ was added. Three years later, in 1964, a bell tower with a bell followed. A small apartment was part of the church from the beginning.

For many years, the Jacobi parish and a local church community shared the Schwedenkirche. Today, only the Jacobi parish uses it. But the spirit of togetherness remains strong.

For a few years, life in the Schwedenkirche wasn’t as vibrant as it once was. But the community came up with new ideas. They wanted to make better use of the space. They wanted to reach more people in the neighborhood.

Now, the Schwedenkirche is alive with activity again. They celebrate a Midsommar festival. Children gather once a month for “Kindersamstag” or children’s Saturday. Every second Monday, the church café opens for seniors. And about ten times a year, there are church services.

The Schwedenkirche is more than just a building. It is a place of community. It is a place of faith. It is a place where everyone is welcome. It stands as a testament to the power of community. It shows the enduring spirit of faith in Greifswald. The Schwedenkirche is ready to welcome whoever comes next.
