Stephen A. Schwarzman is the founder. He conceptualized it in response to the growing tensions between the U.S. and China. He saw China’s economic growth as a potential source of conflict. Gu Binglin asked Schwarzman to help Tsinghua with a “Global Scholars” program. Schwarzman was on the advisory board of Tsinghua University’s School of Economics and Management.
Chen Jining met with Schwarzman in Paris in 2012. Schwarzman wanted to create a program with the same prestige as the Rhodes Scholarship. He wanted to attract top students from around the world. The college needed its own facility. The program needed to be immersive. Mentors would guide scholars. There would be no cost to the scholars. The program would last one year and be taught in English.
Schwarzman Scholars is a one-year master’s degree program in Global Affairs. The program aims to cultivate the next generation of global leaders. Annually, 100 to 200 Schwarzman Scholars are selected. About 40% come from the U.S. 20% come from China. 40% come from the rest of the world. Students apply directly. They do not need a nomination from their university.
The curriculum focuses on Leadership, Global Affairs, and China. Scholars live and study at Schwarzman College. The college is inside Tsinghua University. It provides a residential college experience.
Schwarzman College is called Sūshìmín Shūyuàn in Chinese. This translates directly to Schwarzman Academy. The program is modeled on the Rhodes Scholarship. It competes with programs like the Yenching Scholarship.
Over $575 million has been raised for the program. Global donors contributed. The goal is to create a network of 10,000 alumni within 50 years. These alumni are envisioned as future heads of state.
