“A bridge of sighs, a bridge of woes, a bridge of tales,” an old Freiburg resident might murmur, leaning against the cool stone of the Schwabentorbrrücke. This bridge, spanning the lively Dreisam River, has seen more than its share of Freiburg’s history. Schwabentorbrücke isn’t just a pathway; it’s a storyteller. The Schwabentorbrrücke connects the historic Schwabentor gate, one of only two remaining city gates, to the Black Forest region. Imagine the countless feet that have trod these stones, from medieval merchants to modern-day students. The current Schwabentorbrrücke isn’t Freiburg’s first attempt at bridging this vital crossing. The river has always been a powerful force. In 1896, a devastating flood ripped away two arches of the then-existing stone bridge. This disaster prompted the construction of a magnificent iron bridge in 1898, designed by Hermann Billing with architectural flourishes from Friedrich Bauer. This iron giant served Freiburg well, but by 1974, it couldn’t keep up with the demands of modern traffic. The Schwabentorbrrücke we stand on today is a modern concrete structure. However, it pays homage to its predecessor. Look closely and you’ll see familiar elements, including the cast-iron railings with their intricate coat of arms. These remnants whisper tales of a bygone era. The Schwabentorbrrücke doesn’t stand alone. Two neo-Gothic towers flank the bridge. A quaint fountain house nestles nearby. Adding to the historical tapestry are two sculptures by Julius Seitz. They depict Albertus Magnus on the north side. Martin Malterer stands alongside Leopold III of Habsburg on the south. These figures, frozen in time, connect the Schwabentorbrrücke to Freiburg’s rich past. Look towards the north tower. You’ll notice a plaque commemorating two brave, if perhaps foolish, Baden officials, Karl Siegel and Leopold Sonntag. They tragically lost their lives in the 1896 flood. Despite warnings, they ventured onto the crumbling stone bridge to assess its stability, only to be swept away by the raging waters. Even now, the Schwabentorbrrücke continues to evolve. Recent reports indicate the historical railings are showing signs of rust. The bridge stands as a protected monument, a symbol of Freiburg’s resilience and its enduring connection to the past. So, as you cross the Schwabentorbrrücke, remember, you are walking in the footsteps of history. This bridge is more than just a crossing; it’s a living testament to Freiburg’s enduring spirit.
