Across the Schuylkill River stands a testament to Philadelphia’s enduring spirit. The Schuylkill River Bridge at Market Street isn’t just a bridge. It’s a living history book.

From the late 1600s Philadelphians crossed the Schuylkill River by ferry. Then a floating bridge appeared. This was built during the Revolutionary War. American troops destroyed it. The British rebuilt it. It washed away. Another floating bridge replaced it. It too washed away. The Schuylkill River Bridge at Market Street had a rough start.

In 1805 a permanent bridge finally arrived. Designed by Timothy Palmer it was a wooden structure. It quickly became a landmark. It was covered in 1820 the first covered bridge in the nation. Then in 1850 it expanded for train traffic. Fire destroyed it in 1875. Another wooden bridge replaced it. This was replaced by an iron cantilever bridge in 1888.

Our current Schuylkill River Bridge arrived in 1932. Two stone eagles grace the bridge. They were rescued from New York’s Penn Station before its demolition. In 2009 the bridge received a much-needed makeover. Pedestrian-friendly improvements cleaned it. It now has a more open railing and benches.

The Schuylkill River Bridge at Market Street has witnessed centuries of Philadelphia’s growth. From ferries to trains cars and pedestrians it has connected the city. It stands as a symbol of perseverance and resilience. It’s more than just a bridge. It’s a crucial part of Philadelphia’s story. A story you are standing in right now.
