How about a school that evolved into a vibrant hub of learning and community? That’s Schule Schenefelder Landstraße. This primary school in Hamburg’s Iserbrook district has a story to tell.
Schule Schenefelder Landstraße is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a place where young minds grow. It began its journey in 1961. New buildings were added in 1987. The original buildings showcase the serial construction style of Hamburg’s building authority under Paul Seitz.
Standing here, you can almost hear the echoes of children’s laughter from decades past. In its early years, Schule Schenefelder Landstraße featured a unique piece of art. A two-part ceramic relief titled “Kleinsttiere” by Jens Cords adorned the Kreuzbau. It was installed in 1963 as part of the “Kunst am Bau” program.
The school’s Kreuzbau underwent renovations in 2011 and 2012 for around 700,000 Euros. Further changes in 2012 created nearly 500 square meters of space for all-day care. A school kitchen was added. Now children enjoy hot meals together.
Since 2012, Schule Schenefelder Landstraße has been a Ganztagsschule. This means it offers all-day education and care. It is a GBS, which stands for Ganztägige Bildung und Betreuung an Schulen.
Imagine the schoolyard transformed. For several months, it’s been undergoing a makeover. The school is getting a “green classroom”. Soon, lessons can take place outdoors. In the “Hasenparadies,” seating has been created. Near the basketball court, a long table with benches invites students to eat, play, chat, and even learn.
Each year, the school hosts the ADAC bicycle course. The ADAC bicycle tournament introduces children to the challenges of road traffic. The course provided by the ADAC is set up for the children in the morning.
Schule Schenefelder Landstraße also emphasizes media literacy. Through the “Internet-ABC-Schule” project, children learn how to use the internet competently. There are training courses for teachers and parents. These courses offer tips for media education.

The Schule Schenefelder Landstraße continues to evolve. It adapts to the needs of its students and the community. It stands as a testament to Hamburg’s commitment to education. It is a place where children learn and grow.
