Built in 1961 and 1962 Schule Sander Strasse stands proudly in Hamburg Bergedorf. This primary school wasn’t just any building. It was a testament to post-war reconstruction. Its distinctive cross-shaped design the Kreuzbau was completed on April 2 1962. This architectural marvel wasn’t without its challenges. Documents from 1997 reveal concerns about fire safety. The school’s unique design posed unexpected safety issues.
The Schule Sander Strasse however is more than just bricks and mortar. It boasts a fascinating artistic element. A three-part artwork by Fritz Husmann graced its stairwell. Titled Sonnenblumen and Zugvögel Sunflowers and Migratory Birds. These pieces were acquired in 1960 and 1961 through the Kunst am Bau program. This initiative integrated art into public buildings. It added a touch of beauty and culture to this everyday space.
The school’s history isn’t static. It evolved over time. In 1975 it underwent significant expansion. This growth reflected the changing needs of the community. It expanded to accommodate more students. By 2020 the school included various buildings. These buildings included a main building four pavilions a gymnasium a newer gymnasium from 2012 and a break building from 2004.
Further growth necessitated a more ambitious project. According to plans from 2019 the school expanded to accommodate more students. A new building replaced the older structures. This included classrooms administrative offices a kitchen and a cafeteria. The older pavilions and the main administrative building were demolished as part of this transformation. The new building designed by Trapez Architektur stands as a symbol of modern education. It’s a clear testament to the continuing evolution of this vital community institution. Schule Sander Strasse continues to serve as a cornerstone of learning in the Bergedorf district. It is a vibrant hub of activity for hundreds of students. Its blend of history art and modern architecture make it truly unique.
