Can a school building whisper tales of resilience? Schule Rothestraße, here in Hamburg, certainly can. This seemingly ordinary school has witnessed extraordinary events, echoing the city’s own tumultuous history. Schule Rothestraße wasn’t always a single entity. It began in 1875 when the city of Altona, then independent, consolidated two private schools. This marked the birth of Schule Rothestraße. The south wing, completed in 1875, welcomed students eager to learn. Just a few years later, in 1878, the Oberrealschule Altona-Ottensen joined, sharing the space. The school expanded with the addition of the north wing in 1882. The original Oberrealschule eventually moved to a new building on Treskowallee, now Bleickenallee, before 1889. Schule Rothestraße continued to evolve, becoming the 2nd girls’ middle school in 1910. During the First World War, the classrooms were transformed into a reserve hospital with 80 beds, offering solace and care amidst the conflict. After Altona’s incorporation into Hamburg in 1939, it officially became a girls’ middle school. Tragedy struck during World War II. In 1943 and 1945, the school suffered severe damage from bombings. A devastating air raid on March 30, 1945, claimed many lives sheltering in the school’s air-raid shelter. A plaque at the corner of Arnoldstraße and Rothestraße serves as a poignant reminder of this heartbreaking event. Yet, Schule Rothestraße refused to be silenced. After the war, the building was painstakingly restored, a symbol of Hamburg’s resilience. A new annex arose in the postwar period, further expanding its capacity. Instruction above the elementary level ceased by 1982, marking a shift in the school’s focus. In 1992, Schule Karl-Theodor-Straße merged with Schule Rothestraße, continuing the legacy of education. Another extension, completed in 2001, brought the school into the 21st century. By 2019, Schule Rothestraße encompassed two main buildings, the original and the former Karl-Theodor-Straße school, along with two gymnasiums. Today, as you stand before Schule Rothestraße, remember its journey. It’s a testament to the enduring power of education, even amidst adversity. The whispers of its past resonate within these walls, a reminder of the lives touched, the lessons learned, and the unwavering spirit of a community that rebuilt and thrived.
