The imposing brick building before you is the Schule Kapellenweg. Its history stretches back centuries. Did you know that evidence of a school in Wilstorf dates back to 1742 or 1753? The school’s founding year is traditionally considered to be 1753. This anniversary was even celebrated in 1953. However a 350-year celebration was held in 2000. This discrepancy hints at the complexities of piecing together the school’s long and fascinating past.

From 1814 school buildings were documented in Wilstorf. A new schoolhouse was built in 1876. This was replaced in 1914. The three-winged building with its clock tower is a marvel of early 20th-century architecture. Designed in 1913 by Herr Höhle from the Harburg building authority it stands proudly today. It even holds a protected monument status.

The school’s story is not without challenges. From 1930 to 1937 it housed both an Evangelical-Lutheran and a Catholic elementary school. The Nazi regime then nationalized these confessional schools. Separate schools for boys and girls were established. Sadly World War II left its mark. Between 1944 and 1945 air raids heavily damaged the school buildings. The British military administration even requisitioned the buildings for four months in 1945.

After the war Schule Kapellenweg became a primary secondary and grammar school. It transformed into a primary school only in 1981. A major renovation took place from 2008 to 2010. This involved energetic refurbishment and interior work. A two-story extension was added to the north side of the old building. The extension includes a 6000 square meter multi-purpose hall and a canteen. By 2019 the school complex included an administration building a break building a sports hall four classroom buildings a specialist building and the new extension. Part of the school grounds even housed a training department of the ReBBZ Harburg until 2020.
