Have you ever heard of a school with a 250-year history? Welcome to the Schule Frohmestraße in Hamburg. This remarkable school isn’t just a building it’s a living testament to Hamburg’s rich past. Founded in 1749 the Schule Frohmestraße began as a small village school a single classroom serving the needs of a small community. Imagine the children of Schnelsen walking to this very spot.
The Schule Frohmestraße has seen many changes over the centuries. In 1934 a central section was added. This connected the two original school buildings. The new entrance and grand staircase were built. This significant addition transformed the Schule Frohmestraße into the building we see today.
But this isn’t just a tale of bricks and mortar. It’s a story of people. There’s Carl Teldon alias Nikolaus Felting the school’s first schoolmaster. He was apparently quite the character. The school chronicles from 1753 to 1953 record complaints. His excessive tobacco smoking caused a coughing fit among the students. You can almost smell that pipe tobacco. This is a real smart-aleck fact isn’t it? The original complaint letter is supposedly archived in Kiel.
After World War II the Schule Frohmestraße underwent another transformation. Fritz Beyle a well-known artist and former director of the Altona art school created magnificent murals. These murals depict scenes of daily life: the city the village fishing whaling peat cutting farming and hunting. Look closely and you might even spot characters from the Brothers Grimm fairy tales! These murals were restored in 2015. A book celebrating them was published in 2016.
Today the Schule Frohmestraße is a vibrant school offering full-day care. There’s a workshop for traditional crafts. There’s also a computer room for the digital age. The school even has a chess program partnered with the Schachclub Königsspringer. In 2016 the Schule Frohmestraße received the “Deutsche Schachschule” quality seal. The Schule Frohmestraße has even more. It has a canteen a new building and plans for further expansion. This school is truly a hub of learning and community life.
This is not just an ordinary school. The Schule Frohmestraße is a testament to the enduring spirit of learning and community. It’s a living history lesson right here in the heart of Hamburg. It’s a school that reflects history and embraces the future. And what’s more it’s a school with a fascinating past and a bright future.
