“Schmetterlingsschule” you say. Schule Forsmannstraße has been called that since 2007. It means “Grundschule für begabungsentfaltenden Unterricht.” That translates to an elementary school for gifted education. It is a place where learning goes beyond the ordinary.

Schule Forsmannstraße is more than just a school. It is a historic landmark in Hamburg’s Winterhude district. The school was founded in 1910. Its construction began in 1908. Albert Erbe designed the building. Today it stands protected as a cultural monument.

Originally, the building was a dual Volksschule. This meant separate entrances for boys and girls. Boys entered through door number 32. Girls used door number 34. Imagine the bustling hallways echoing with the sounds of children learning.

Koedukation was introduced in 1926. It allowed boys and girls to learn together in the upper grades. This progressive step was reversed in 1933. Separate schools for boys and girls were established again in 1935. The school then became two separate entities. One school was for boys with upper grades. The other was for girls.

World War II brought disruption. Air raids in the summer of 1943 forced the school to close. The building served as a camp for Italian forced laborers. Later, it housed a division of German marine infantry. Imagine the shift from classrooms to military quarters.

In the autumn of 1945, Unterricht began again. Schule Forsmannstraße became a Gemeinschaftsschule in 1959. This meant coeducation was back. Finally, in 1980, it became a primary school. It has focused solely on elementary education ever since.

Today, Schule Forsmannstraße operates on two sites. The main building is on Forsmannstraße. Another location is on Barmbeker Straße. Vorschulklassen and first classes are at Forsmannstraße. Grades three and four are at Barmbeker Straße.

The school participates in various development projects. It emphasizes research-based learning. Schule Forsmannstraße uses the Schulische-Enrichment–Modell. This model supports individual talents. It also promotes gifted education.

Talent courses are offered. These replace traditional elective courses. Enrichment opportunities are available through parents. Experts from inside and outside the school contribute. Children explore questions through philosophy. The adults act as learning coaches.

Ninety-seven percent of students participate in afternoon programs. KinderCampus Hamburg runs the afternoon care in close collaboration with the school. Schule Forsmannstraße has been an official GBS since 2013. GBS means Ganztägige Betreuung an Schulen. This translates to all-day care in schools.

Schule Forsmannstraße stands as a testament to Hamburg’s educational evolution. It is a place where children explore their potential. It is a school that embraces its history. From separate entrances to co-education, Schule Forsmannstraße has adapted. It continues to nurture young minds in the heart of Winterhude.
