Let’s step back in time. The Schule Bahrenfelder Straße was founded in 1877 as the Schule Ottensen. It moved twice before settling into its new building on Bahrenfelder Straße in 1902. Back then, it housed an impressive 981 students in 15 classes. Imagine the lively atmosphere.

The original 1902 building is no longer standing. During World War I, part of the Volksschule Bahrenfelderstraße became a military hospital. It held 135 beds. Later in 1920, Gustav Oelsner designed an extension. The school then operated as a school for boys.

Tragedy struck in 1943 and 1944. The school building was destroyed. Reconstruction began in 1949. By 1952, a new building emerged incorporating parts of the 1920 structure. The school expanded further in 1954. Pavilions and an auditorium were added.

Today, the Schule Bahrenfelder Straße stands as a protected monument. This includes the main building classrooms administration the single-story pavilions the auditorium and the gymnasium. Even the arcades and outdoor areas are preserved. A bronze pelican statue once graced the grounds. In 2014, the multi-purpose hall got a makeover. Renovations of the school buildings were announced in 2017.

The Schule Bahrenfelder Straße is located in Ottensen. Its address is now Gaussstrasse 171. Originally it was Bahrenfelder Straße 275. The schoolyard covers about 15000 square meters. It’s bordered by Bahrenfelder Straße Gaussstrasse and Borselstrasse.

Currently around 440 students attend the Schule Bahrenfelder Straße. The faculty comprises about 60 members. The school is a GBS primary school. It emphasizes cultural awareness.
