The Schule Am Sooren didn’t just appear overnight. Its story begins with careful planning. Starting in 1961 architect Ernst May began to shape its design. His vision extended to the neighboring Rahlstedt-Ost settlement. The cornerstone was laid in 1965. The new building opened its doors in 1966. Construction continued in phases until 1969. The final phase included a gym and assembly hall. These buildings were cleverly connected by a covered walkway. The school’s exterior boasts brown sand-finished bricks. This same material was used in interior hallways and staircases. White artificial stone plates elegantly accent the window sills and frames.
Over the years the school has adapted and grown. Wooden pavilions were added in 1971. Parts of the school became a youth center in the 1980s. The entrance was rebuilt in 1992. By 2010 the Schule Am Sooren was a primary school. In 2012 a significant renovation took place. 200 square meters were remodeled for after-school care. This cost 1.3 million euros. The school’s future plans are ambitious. It aims to increase its capacity from two to three classes. This is according to the 2019 school development plan.
