Imagine a school where learning meets nature. That’s Schule am Park, a primary school with a preschool nestled in Harburg. This school is more than just a building. It is a place where young minds grow and discover.

Let’s step back to summer 2021. Schule am Park opened its doors. It welcomed preschool and first-grade children. After two years of planning, the school was ready. In early summer 2023, the school moved. It relocated to the renovated Jugendstil building. This building was once the Lessing-Stadtteilschule. The rooms are now designed for primary school students.

Currently, about 100 children attend Schule am Park. They are in preschool and first and second grades. The school is the smallest in Hamburg right now. But Schule am Park has plans to grow. It will expand to a four-track system. Then it will become a medium-sized primary school.

What makes Schule am Park special? The school focuses on exploring the world. Science and social studies are key subjects. Language is also a priority. The school offers immersive English instruction. Children learn English not only in regular classes. They also learn it in art and theater. This approach makes learning English fun.

In August 2021, Schule am Park started with only 32 students. This made it the smallest school in Hamburg. In comparison, Grundschule Cranz had 73 students. Stadtteilschule Harburg was the largest, with 1,748 students.

The growing number of students in Hamburg is notable. The first grades saw an increase of 600 children. Overall, primary schools experienced a 3.5 percent increase. This equals about 2,100 children. Preschool classes had an even larger increase. They grew by up to 1,000 students.
