Can a school building whisper tales of transformation? The Schule am Falkplatz can. This grand structure at Gleimstraße 49 in Berlin’s Prenzlauer Berg district has witnessed remarkable changes. Originally built between 1913 and 1916, the Schule am Falkplatz first served as the Luisenstädtisches Gymnasium, designed by Ludwig Hoffmann. In 1928, it was renamed Heinrich-Schliemann-Oberschule after the famous archaeologist. The Schule am Falkplatz even endured a darker period when its dedication was changed to honor Horst Wessel in 1939. After World War II, the school returned to its original location and purpose. It later became a polytechnical high school before housing the 1st Berlin Children and Youth Sports School. Following reunification, the Schule am Falkplatz underwent renovations from 1991 to 1994. It was reborn as the 11th elementary school of the Prenzlauer Berg district. A new schoolyard and recreational area were added in 2004. The school then received its current name, Schule am Falkplatz. The Schule am Falkplatz’s story doesn’t end there. It has embraced its role as an environmental school, earning numerous awards for its dedication to sustainability. The school maintains an ecological garden, a petting zoo, and a learning workshop focused on environmental awareness. It has received the “Environmental School in Europe” award multiple times and was honored with the Berlin Environmental Prize in 2010.
