It’s located in the Burg district of Hanover. The center’s main location resides within the beautiful Botanischer Schulgarten Burg. It also includes the Freiluftschule Burg and the Botanischer Schulgarten Linden. These spaces offer diverse learning environments for everyone.
The Schulbiologiezentrum Hannover supports hands-on learning about nature. It caters to students from preschool to high school. In 2011, the center welcomed an incredible 63,700 visitors. Over 33,000 of these were students participating in 1,609 classes and groups. The center also extends its educational reach to teachers. They offer professional development courses and resources. These courses help educators incorporate effective environmental education into their teaching. This ensures that future educators are well-equipped to teach about environmental sustainability.
The Schulbiologiezentrum Hannover spans over 16 hectares. This includes 7 hectares of forest, complete with ponds, streams, and various ecosystems. There’s an energy garden, an insect garden, a genetics garden, a geology garden, and even an apothecary garden. Greenhouses offer unique learning opportunities. Animal enclosures and a vivarium allow students to interact with live animals. Dedicated nurseries support school garden projects. They provide over 2,500 plant deliveries each year, tailored to specific school topics. The center also has a lending service. It provides models, equipment, and themed kits for complete lesson units. In 2011, over 25,000 learning materials were borrowed from this valuable resource. The Schulbiologiezentrum Hannover continually adapts its programs. They focus on current curriculum needs and developing crucial skills for understanding the natural world. They teach classic biology topics like genetics, evolution, biodiversity, and ecology. They also explore broader themes like rainforests, deserts, climate change, and renewable energy.
