The Schützenhaus Kunigundenruh is part of a small gathering. It includes two stone crosses and a memorial stone. There’s also an inn with a beer garden nearby. All this lies in the Hauptsmoorwald. This forest sits east of Bamberg.
The name “Kunigundenruh” connects to Empress Kunigunde. She lived around 980 to 1033. Legend says she and her husband, Emperor Heinrich II rested here. One story tells of Kunigunde throwing her wedding ring. She aimed toward the Bamberg Cathedral. The ring supposedly hit the Kunigundenglocke. It damaged the bell but the ring remained unharmed. Another version claims Heinrich threw the ring in jealousy.
Another legend says Kunigunde released a cloth into the wind. The spot where it landed became Kunigundenruh. Regardless of the tale, the name stuck. It marks a place of imperial rest.
In 1884, a forester built a house here. It stood on the site of the imperial rest area. This building eventually became a well-known restaurant. Today, the Schützenhaus Kunigundenruh is home to a Bamberg club. It’s the “Vorm. privil. Schützengesellschaft 1306 Bamberg e.V.”. That’s a shooting club with roots going back centuries.
Just 200 meters from the Schützenhaus Kunigundenruh, you can find more historical markers. There are two Kunigunden crosses from the 17th century. They date back to 1601 and 1676. You will also find the Kunigundenruh stone with an information panel.
The Schützenhaus Kunigundenruh even faced a fire in 2015. The blaze damaged the shooting range’s bullet trap. Thankfully, firefighters controlled the situation quickly. The nearby inn was safe. No one was hurt.
