Professor Lambadarios’ legacy lives on. This very building the School of Rural Surveying and Geoinformatics Engineering stands as a testament to his vision. Established in 1917 as the Higher School of Surveying Engineering it initially required only three years of study. By 1930 however this had expanded to four years. The name also changed to the Higher School of Rural and Surveying Engineering.
Professor Demetrios Lambadarios a key figure in these developments was a member of Athens Academy. He served as Rector of NTUA from 1928 to 1933. He was also Dean of the School for many years. His significant contributions are honored today with this building bearing his name.
The School of Rural Surveying and Geoinformatics Engineering continued to evolve. In 1974 under Dean George Veis the curriculum was extended to five years. Later in 2001 the Northwest building was renamed the Veis building to further acknowledge Professor Veis’s contributions. The school’s title changed again in 1982 becoming the Department of Rural and Surveying Engineering. Professor Dionyssios Balodimos became its first president. The current name School of Rural Surveying and Geoinformatics Engineering reflects the school’s ongoing adaptation to modern needs.
The School has had many presidents since the 1983-84 academic year. Professor Balodimos served multiple terms. Other presidents include Professors Koutsopoulos Mpilliris and Georgopoulos. More recently Professors Kavouras and Ioannidis have led the school. This building has witnessed decades of academic progress. It has nurtured generations of engineers shaping Greece’s landscape and future.
