“What makes Columbia University School of Nursing one of the oldest nursing schools in the United States?” Let’s step back in time to 1892. This is where our story of innovation and leadership begins at the School of Nursing.

The School of Nursing started as the Presbyterian Hospital Training School for Nurses. Anna C. Maxwell served as its first dean. Early students learned many subjects. These included hygiene, bacteriology, anatomy, and even Swedish massage. Imagine learning to cook for the homebound as part of your nursing education.

Fast forward to 1937. The School of Nursing officially joined Columbia University. In 1940, it awarded its first Bachelor of Science degrees. But the School of Nursing wasn’t done breaking barriers.

In 1956, it became the first in the U.S. to offer a master’s degree in a clinical nursing specialty. This emphasis on clinical scholarship remains a hallmark today. The School of Nursing collaborates with other Columbia professional schools.

The School of Nursing moved to a new building in 2017. This modern, 68,000-square-foot space features advanced simulation centers. Here, students hone skills in realistic settings. These include mock in-patient rooms and operating rooms.

Today, Columbia University School of Nursing offers diverse degree programs. These programs train registered nurses, nurse practitioners, and more. The school developed the Doctor of Nursing Practice degree in 2004. It was one of the first in the nation.

The School of Nursing has affiliations with major medical centers. These include New York-Presbyterian and Mount Sinai Hospital. Students gain experience at over 200 clinical practice sites throughout New York City.

Deans like Anna C. Maxwell and Lorraine Frazier have shaped the School of Nursing. They have ensured its place as a leader in nursing education. The School of Nursing continues to evolve. It equips students with the skills to improve health care. Learning at Columbia Nursing extends beyond classrooms. Clinical placements provide invaluable real-world experience. Students tackle healthcare’s challenges in New York City. From its start to its current prominence, Columbia University School of Nursing remains a beacon of nursing excellence.
