Did you know that UKZN’s School of Life Sciences has one of the most successful postgraduate programs in South Africa? Currently, 103 MSc and 69 PhD students are registered here. Students come from all over. They come from South Africa, Africa, Europe, Asia, and North America. This diverse group brings a global perspective to their studies.

The BSc program here is quite flexible. It offers a general BSc in Life and Earth Sciences. Students can combine subjects like Biochemistry, Biology, and more. There are also specific focused BSc degrees. These include Biological Sciences and Industrial and Applied Biotechnology.

To get into the BSc program, you need a National Senior Certificate degree. You also need Maths, English, and Life Orientation. Agricultural Science, Physical Science, or Life Science at level 4 is also needed. The admission points range from 28 to 48. The highest-scoring students are taken first. Industrial and Applied Biotechnology requires at least 30 points.

Postgraduate studies here cover many areas. These include biological and conservation sciences. Admission is based on merit. Staff members decide to accept students. They ensure each student receives adequate support. Many staff members offer financial support.

Students need to submit their theses on time. The Faculty Office sets deadlines. They need six weeks to examine a master’s dissertation. They need eight weeks for a PhD thesis. The Faculty Office ensures examiners receive documents quickly.

Returning students must re-register early each year. The deadline is usually 28 February. Late registration incurs a fee. Both student and supervisor must sign every thesis.
