The School of Economics and Political Sciences – UoA is a vital part of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. The University of Athens has a long and storied past. It was founded in 1837. The school began in the residence of architect Stamatis Cleanthes. Now, it is the Athens University Museum.
Initially named Othonian University after King Otto of Greece, it later became the National University. A split occurred in 1911. The Kapodistrian University held Theology Law and Philosophy. The National University included Medicine Physics and Mathematics. They reunited in 1932. It formed the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.
Political economy found a home here early on. A chair of political economy was created at the Faculty of Law. Ioannes A. Soutsos was its first professor. He taught for fifty years. From 1926 to 1967 economics courses resided in the Faculty of Law. Students could earn a degree in Law or Economics after four years.
In 1967, new departments emerged within the Faculty of Law. These were the Department of Law and the Department of Political and Economic Sciences. A fourth year led to degrees in economics or politics. By 1972, the Department of Political and Economic Sciences split. It created the Department of Economics and the Department of Political Science and Public Administration.
Today, the Department of Economics is independent. It is within the Faculty of Economic and Political Sciences. It boasts 33 faculty members and 3500 undergraduate students. Around 140 graduate students study here. The school awards 350 economics degrees annually.
The School of Economics and Political Sciences – UoA faculty engages in diverse research. It includes economics economic history and philosophy. They also study mathematics statistics and information science. The department enriches economic knowledge. It offers critical analysis of economic relations and institutions. Its research contributes to Greek and international literature.
The School of Economics and Political Sciences – UoA participates in international programs. The Master’s Program in Southeast Europe focuses on politics history and economics. It is taught in English. It explores historical social political economic and cultural issues. The program encourages international participation. It provides a unique learning experience in Athens.
The Centre of Continuing Education and Lifelong Learning is also part of the University. It offers short-term courses. These courses cover various subjects. They are certified by the EOPPEP. This provides educational opportunities for adults of all ages.
