The Tsinghua University School of Economics and Management is not just a school. It is a powerhouse of innovation and leadership. Established in 1984 it has quickly become a leading institution in China.

Before 1984 Tsinghua University had a Faculty of Economics dating back to 1926. However in 1956 it was separated and merged into other universities. With China’s economic reforms in 1979 Tsinghua began rebuilding its economics and management programs. This led to the official establishment of the School of Economics and Management in 1984. Zhu Rongji served as the first dean.

The Tsinghua School of Economics and Management quickly gained recognition. It was the first mainland Chinese institution to achieve AACSB and EQUIS accreditations. These accreditations ensured its business and accounting programs met global standards. Impressively the founding Dean Zhu Rongji later became the fifth Premier of the People’s Republic of China. This shows the school’s impact on China’s leadership.

Tsinghua SEM offers a wide range of programs. These include undergraduate master doctoral and executive education programs. More than 3000 students are enrolled. The school has eight majors including management science and engineering finance economics and accounting. Other majors are corporation strategy and policy marketing human resources management and technology economics and management.

Numerous research centers operate within the school. These centers focus on contemporary management technological innovation entrepreneurship financial research economic research and more. They also study retail business the world economy and insurance and risk management.

The faculty at Tsinghua SEM is top-notch. Since 2006 the school has recruited faculty from reputable Ph.D. programs worldwide. Many faculty members have international educational backgrounds from universities like Harvard Yale Wharton MIT Sloan and Stanford.

Tsinghua SEM’s undergraduate program is highly competitive. It is considered one of the two most competitive business programs in mainland China. Many admitted students rank in the top 10 in their provinces on the National Higher Education Entrance Examination. This exam is also known as the Gaokao.

The school’s advisory board is unique. Initiated by Founding Dean Zhu Rongji in 2000 it includes leaders from various fields. The board offers advice on the school’s development promotes faculty development supports research centers and funds research projects.

The advisory board consists largely of non-Tsinghua alumni. Prominent international members have included Ho Ching Mark Zuckerberg Elon Musk and Tim Cook. Others are Stephen Schwarzman Henry Paulson Muhtar Kent and Carlos Ghosn. Chinese advisory board members have included Jack Ma Pony Ma Robin Li and Marjorie Yang.

Tsinghua SEM also has strong international collaborations. The Global MBA program is offered in collaboration with the MIT Sloan School of Management. Students earn an MBA from Tsinghua University and a certificate from MIT Sloan. The school also offers an executive MBA program with INSEAD. This dual degree program combines international business education with a focus on Asia.

The Tsinghua-MIT Global MBA program is a two-year full-time program. It integrates Tsinghua’s existing MBA programs. It also offers elective modules and dual-degree options at MIT. MIT Sloan faculty offer courses on Tsinghua’s campus.

Tsinghua SEM aims to immerse students in Chinese language and culture. The GMBA program requires a thesis for graduating students. Elective coursework includes tracks in banking enterprise innovation accounting analysis and international business administration.

Guest lecturers at Tsinghua SEM include prominent executives and business leaders. Mark Zuckerberg once delivered a speech in Chinese at the school calling it a great center of innovation.
