The Clinical School itself was established later in 1976. This was during the construction of the new Addenbrooke’s Hospital building. This marked the start of a completely new medical course at Cambridge University. The course underwent restructuring in 2005. A new final year was added. The clinical course was previously less than three years long.

Before 2017 many students left Cambridge after pre-clinical studies. There weren’t enough places on the clinical course. From 2017 onwards all Cambridge medical students could continue their studies in Cambridge. This was for the full six years.

The School boasts impressive departments. Clinical Biochemistry Clinical Neurosciences Haematology and Medical Genetics are just a few. These are supported by renowned institutes like the MRC Cancer Unit and the Cambridge Institute for Medical Research. The Herchel Smith Laboratory for Medicinal Chemistry is a particularly noteworthy research facility.

The Regius Professorship of Physic is based at the School of Clinical Medicine. It’s a prestigious position. Currently it’s held by Patrick Maxwell. Other prominent academics including Kay-Tee Khaw Professor of Clinical Gerontology and Ieuan Hughes Professor Emeritus of Paediatrics have also contributed to the school’s legacy.
