Ever wondered what secrets lie hidden beneath the seemingly ordinary landscape? Welcome to the Schonerlinder Teiche. These ponds aren’t just pretty water features. Their history is far more intriguing than you might imagine.

The Schonerlinder Teiche are a 40.76 hectare nature reserve. They sit on the edge of Berlin in the Muhlenbeck district. You can easily reach them. Just a short 300-meter stroll from Muhlenbeck-Monchmuehle S-Bahn station. But this tranquil spot has a surprisingly industrial past.

Originally created in 1908 these ponds served a rather unusual purpose. They were part of a massive wastewater filtration system for Berlin. Imagine the sheer volume of city waste being channeled here. For almost seventy years the Schonerlinder Teiche played this crucial role. The system was decommissioned in the 1980s. A modern sewage treatment plant was built nearby.

Surprisingly the ponds also housed a carp farm and duck pens until 1977. After the filtration system closed the area was left to nature. The ponds became overgrown and largely forgotten. This unintentional neglect proved to be a blessing. Rare plants and endangered animals thrived undisturbed in this hidden sanctuary.

By 1997 the ecological importance of the Schonerlinder Teiche was undeniable. The area was designated a nature reserve. A walking path was built around the ponds. An observation tower was constructed to allow visitors to enjoy the wildlife. Sadly vandals burned down the tower. It was rebuilt in 2010 thanks to funding from Berliner Stadtguter. They own the land.

The Schonerlinder Teiche have a special attraction. In 2010 a four-kilometer-long nature trail called the Lowenzahnpfad was opened. This trail is unique. It’s the only nature trail in Germany with a direct S-Bahn connection. School children from Berlin and Brandenburg enjoy nature-related activities along this path. They learn about bees water buffaloes Konik horses and more. A hidden Geocaching treasure adds to the fun.

Birds are a key feature of the Schonerlinder Teiche. A biodiversity survey in 2009 identified various species. These included Reed Bunting Reed Warbler Blackbird Black Kite Goldfinch Whinchat and Little Grebe. These creatures inhabit the rich and varied ecosystems of the Schonerlinder Teiche. This area shows the surprising result of accidental preservation. What was once a functional waste disposal system has become a haven for biodiversity. A testament to nature’s resilience and the unexpected benefits of urban neglect. So next time you think of Berlin don’t just picture the Brandenburg Gate or the Reichstag. Remember the Schonerlinder Teiche. A quiet corner of nature offering a surprising history and a vibrant present.
