“A bridge in need of some serious TLC.” That’s how I’d describe the Schönerlinder Brücke to a friend. This bridge is a vital, yet troubled, artery in Berlin’s transportation network. It’s right here in front of us.

The Schönerlinder Brücke carries the A114 Bundesautobahn, a major highway. It crosses Schönerlinder Straße. The bridge provides a crucial link for those traveling between Französisch Buchholz and the northern areas outside of Berlin. Many commuters rely on it daily.

Built in 1973, the Schönerlinder Brücke has shown its age. By late 2024, the bridge’s condition had deteriorated so much that restrictions were necessary. Only one lane was open. This was to reduce stress on the aging structure. Traffic lights controlled the flow. This created delays for the 15,000 vehicles using it each day.

The Schönerlinder Brücke’s pedestrian and bike paths were also affected. They shifted onto the remaining lane. This measure aimed to lessen the load and ensure user safety.

But don’t worry. There’s no immediate danger of collapse. That’s according to the Autobahn GmbH. The lane reduction is a precaution. It is to keep the Schönerlinder Brücke safely operational until its replacement.

The current plan involves a complete replacement of the Schönerlinder Brücke. The Autobahn GmbH intends to start demolition and reconstruction in 2027. The project is in the “preparatory planning” phase. Every component of the current structure is undergoing thorough inspection.

Planners are particularly interested in the bridge’s abutments or supporting ends. If these can be saved, construction time could be significantly reduced. Studies are underway to determine if this is possible.

The project’s start date depends on approvals from Berlin’s district and senate authorities. Coordination between all parties is vital. This makes it essential to secure permits and ensure seamless execution.

In April 2017 the Schönerlinder Brücke had to be closed. In August 2017 it was reopened again.

While we stand here, consider the future. Soon the Schönerlinder Brücke will be renewed. It will be stronger and safer for generations to come. It highlights the ongoing effort to maintain Berlin’s infrastructure.
