Built in 1856 the William H Schofield House stands proudly on City Island. It’s a beautiful example of early Pelham architecture. This landmark home tells a story of family and resilience. The Schofield family prominent City Island settlers built it. William Schofield Sr and his wife Maria Bishop Schofield arrived in 1826. They farmed the land. Their eldest son William Henry Schofield inherited the house. He wasn’t a farmer though. He became a successful oysterman.

The house itself is a stunning blend of architectural styles. It’s a transitional Italianate farmhouse. It features tall windows and a square plan. Greek Revival elements are also present. Notice the flat roof with its overhanging cornice. See the elaborate paired brackets under the eaves. These flank octagonal windows. The wood clapboard siding adds to its charm. The one-story veranda is the home’s most striking feature. It runs the width of the ground floor.

The Schofield House has seen renovations. These were done sensitively. The house was moved a few feet. New foundations and porch footings were added. The roof was replaced. Original Yankee gutters and copper downspouts were reproduced. Deteriorated clapboards were replaced with matching composite materials. Replacement windows and lintels match the original design. The porch posts brackets and other details were repaired and reused. These careful updates ensure the home’s historical integrity.

In 2016 the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission recognized its significance. They designated the Schofield Street House a New York City Landmark. This is a testament to its architectural beauty and historical importance. The Schofield Street House stands as a lasting tribute to a family’s legacy. It remains a cherished part of City Island’s history. The house continues to enchant visitors. It silently speaks of bygone eras and the enduring spirit of the Schofields.
