“A bridge to the past, you say?” scoffed a voice from the crowd. “This Schnettkerbrücke is all shiny steel and new concrete.” I smiled, knowing the secrets hidden beneath the modern facade of the Schnettkerbrücke. “Indeed, it looks modern,” I conceded. “But this bridge carries more than just cars across the Emscher Valley. It carries the echoes of history.” The Schnettkerbrücke, as we see it today, is a marvel of engineering. A two-part, four-span continuous beam bridge, its main opening boasts a striking central girder arch bridge. It stretches 328 meters across the valley, its 41.6-meter width accommodating six lanes of bustling traffic on the A40. But its story begins long before this sleek structure. Before the First World War, the first attempt to build a bridge here began. It remained unfinished, a ghost of what could have been. Then, in 1931, a riveted steel truss bridge rose, connecting the west slope of the Dortmund ridge to the northern foothills of the Ardeygebirge. This Schnettkerbrücke served the city, even receiving a pedestrian and cycle path in 1946, a vital link to the Technical University of Dortmund. By 1957, with the expansion of the Ruhrschnellweg, the bridge widened. A lighter roadway replaced the concrete, reinforcing the structure. However, the ever-increasing traffic flow, reaching 80,000 vehicles daily by 2005, demanded a new solution. And so, in 2005, the deconstruction and rebirth of the Schnettkerbrücke began. The south bridge emerged first, its steel sections assembled piece by piece on a pre-assembly area and then incrementally shifted across the valley. The northern section followed, mirroring its twin. A vibrant carmine-red steel arch, held by eight hangers, finally united the two structures, creating the Schnettkerbrücke we marvel at today. The construction was a feat, with steel components forged in Kurgan, Siberia, and the arch itself coming from Nordhausen. Even the foundations posed a challenge, the soft ground requiring extensive work. But on May 31, 2012, the new Schnettkerbrücke officially opened, a testament to engineering resilience and a symbol of Dortmund’s connection to its past. As you cross this bridge, remember the echoes of the past resonating beneath your feet. It’s a bridge to the future, built on the foundations of history.
