How about we uncover the secrets of Schmiedestraße in Hannover? This street whispers tales from medieval times. It is one of the oldest streets in the city. Schmiedestraße was once part of the heart of Hannover’s old town.

Before the Second World War, Hannover had a large old town. Narrow lanes and half-timbered buildings filled the area. Poor people lived there under bad conditions. Other Hannoverians avoided it. They thought it was a place of crime. Few people cared about the historic value of the buildings. The old town stretched from Steintor to Aegidientorplatz. Today, you can only recognize its shape. Schmiedestraße and other main streets connected at the old gates. This was common in German merchants’ settlements.

After the bombings of World War II, almost nothing was left. Only forty old half-timbered buildings remained. Some were on Knochenhauerstraße and Burgstraße. During the rebuilding, parts of old buildings were moved. They rebuilt the facades in this area. This created a “new old town” in Hannover’s oldest part.

The Old Town Hall stands on Schmiedestraße. It is an architectural highlight of Hannover’s Old Town. Together with the Marktkirche, it is considered a prime example of North German brick Gothic. Construction spanned nearly a century. The oldest part on Schmiedestraße dates back to 1420. A market wing followed. It was built on the foundation walls of a 13th-century store hall. Later, the pharmacy wing was added on Köbelinger Straße. This wing was eventually replaced with a building in the Italian Romanesque style.

In 1844, there was a plan to demolish the entire Town Hall. A citizens’ initiative protested. Architect Conrad Wilhelm Hase led the effort. He renovated the remaining wings. He restored them to their stylistically pure state from around 1500.

Look closely at the magnificent Gothic fial gables. Notice the clay frieze above the outer right arched window on Schmiedestraße. It shows portraits of princes and coats of arms. It also depicts “Luderziehen.” This was a medieval folk game. It is similar to finger-wagging in southern Germany.

Today, Schmiedestraße blends history and modernity. As you walk along Schmiedestraße, imagine the merchants trading goods. Picture the narrow lanes bustling with life. Consider the resilience of a city that rebuilt its heart.
