You are standing right in front of the Schmidt Recreation Center, its name emblazoned across the facade, a testament to the legacy of Stephen J. Schmidt, a 1940 Oglethorpe graduate. This building, which you see today, is an extension of the Dorough Field House, a testament to the history of athletics at Oglethorpe. Schmidt, dedicated to the university’s thriving athletic programs, made its construction possible through a substantial donation. The building houses basketball and volleyball courts, a fitness center, and even a golf room. There are also offices for coaches and athletic staff. While the Schmidt Recreation Center was added to the Dorough Field House in 1960, it has seen several upgrades over the years. In 2015, the athletic program invested in new state-of-the-art training equipment. Just a few years later, the center’s auxiliary gym received new wooden flooring with the Oglethorpe University logo proudly displayed in the center.
