“A railway line built out of necessity,” a grizzled old-timer once told me, pointing towards the overgrown path. “The Schmalspurbahn Klingenberg-Colmnitz–Oberdittmannsdorf. It was a lifeline, you see, but not a very profitable one.” We stand now, where the bustling heart of this narrow-gauge railway once beat, at the former Klingenberg-Colmnitz station. The Schmalspurbahn Klingenberg-Colmnitz–Oberdittmannsdorf, a Saxon narrow-gauge railway, stretched for nearly 18.5 kilometers, connecting the Klingenberg-Colmnitz–Frauenstein and Freital-Potschappel–Nossen lines. Imagine, if you will, the year 1915. The First World War raged. Resources were scarce. Yet, amidst the turmoil, construction began on the Schmalspurbahn Klingenberg-Colmnitz–Oberdittmannsdorf as a public work project, a testament to human resilience. The newly formed Deutsche Reichsbahn oversaw its completion in stages between 1921 and 1923. The Schmalspurbahn Klingenberg-Colmnitz–Oberdittmannsdorf snaked its way through the scenic Tharandt Forest. It served the small villages nestled along its route, carrying passengers and goods. It crossed viaducts and hugged the contours of the land. From Klingenberg-Colmnitz, it ran parallel to the Frauenstein line for a short distance before diverging southwards to Colmnitz station, then turning north to skirt Niedercolmnitz. The line continued northwest through the Tharandt Forest, a section now a peaceful hiking and biking trail. It traversed a large viaduct between the two Naundorf stations, then followed the Bobritzsch valley to Falkenberg. The Schmalspurbahn Klingenberg-Colmnitz–Oberdittmannsdorf climbed to a ridge before descending into Niederschöna, then eastward and finally northward, where it joined the Freital-Potschappel–Nossen line at Oberdittmannsdorf station. Despite its importance to local communities, the Schmalspurbahn Klingenberg-Colmnitz–Oberdittmannsdorf struggled financially. Its passenger numbers remained low. At times, only a single mixed train ran daily. Freight traffic ceased in June 1971. Passenger services followed suit in September. By 1979, the tracks were gone. Yet, the memory of the Schmalspurbahn Klingenberg-Colmnitz–Oberdittmannsdorf lives on. Traces of its existence remain, waiting to be discovered by those who know where to look. Station buildings, viaducts, and the tranquil path through the Tharandt Forest serve as silent reminders of this once vital artery.
