A grand testament to a turbulent past, Schloss Steinach has witnessed centuries of change. This impressive manor, Schloss Steinach, stands before you, a silent sentinel to history. Built between 1659 and 1661, Schloss Steinach replaced an earlier structure destroyed during the Thirty Years’ War. It was commissioned by Burkhard Löffelholz, a prominent figure in Nuremberg, as a symbol of his family’s status. Imagine the clatter of hooves and crunch of gravel as horse-drawn carriages once pulled into the grand courtyard. The Löffelholz family, seeking a retreat from the bustling city, enjoyed the peace and tranquility of the countryside here. The imposing entrance gate, crafted from rusticated ashlar, remains largely unchanged since 1662, offering us a glimpse into that opulent era. Within the manor’s walls, whispers of past grandeur linger. Step inside, and you’ll find yourself in a grand hall, the heart of Schloss Steinach. Look up, and you’ll be mesmerized by the intricate Baroque stuccowork adorning the ceiling and framing the large oval windows. This remarkable craftsmanship, believed to date back to the manor’s construction, features winged female figures—perhaps Harpies, those rapacious wind demons of Greek mythology—bound by stucco bands, symbolizing the restraint of greed. Over the centuries, Schloss Steinach has changed hands many times, leaving its mark on the structure. The south gable, having collapsed in 1913 under the weight of its ornate sandstone decorations, was rebuilt. Unfortunately, the ornate portal adorned with the Löffelholz family crest and the sweeping stone steps were lost during the reconstruction. Today, Schloss Steinach stands as a reminder of a bygone era of opulence and grandeur, a testament to the enduring power of history, even in the face of change.
