Time stood still at Schloss Radeck. Its stones whispered tales of centuries past. This is Schloss Radeck in Bergheim a place where history unfolds before your very eyes. Schloss Radeck boasts a heritage stretching back to the 13th century. Originally owned by the local Radecker family. They were among Salzburg’s most important ministerial families during the 13th and 14th centuries. The castle’s original structure sadly no longer exists. Only fragments remain. Its 16th-century chapel however endures a testament to time’s passage.

Imagine Ulrich and Heinrich von Radeck. In 1270 they mortgaged Schloss Radeck. The mortgagees were Ulrich von Wispach and Chunrad von Kuchl. Three years later Heinrich sold half to Archbishop Frederick of Walchen. By 1334 Archbishop Frederick of Liebnitz acquired the rest. Schloss Radeck then served as the Hallwang court’s seat.

In 1508 the court relocated to Neuhaus Castle. Hans III Präzl became the new owner. He undertook a significant reconstruction. In 1516 he added the chapel next to the main building. Schloss Radeck wasn’t spared the ravages of war. A devastating fire in 1525 during the peasant war inflicted severe damage. Despite this setback the castle was rebuilt. Ownership changed hands many times. The barons of Rehlingen extensively renovated Schloss Radeck in 1670. By 1685 it belonged to Salzburg canon Franz Anton Graf zu Königsegg.

His heiress Countess Anna Eleonora Fuggerin née Königsegg sold Schloss Radeck in 1713. It passed through various owners. The Napoleonic Wars caused further damage. Philip Gäng the then owner sold it to Salzburg University in 1813. It returned to noble ownership until 1837. Emperor Ferdinand I granted it to Abbot Albert IV Nagnzaun. Schloss Radeck fell into disrepair. In 1854 Felix Fuchs a local farmer acquired it. By 1860 much of the castle had been demolished. What remained was removed in 1972. A new building now stands in its place. The 16th-century chapel and some original details survive. The chapel dedicated to St John the Baptist stands as a poignant reminder. Its coat of arms and a painted gallery railing from 1690 remain. A stone coat of arms on the house depicts the Königsegg family. It came from the castle’s former gate. Since 1993 the chapel is a protected monument a testament to Schloss Radeck’s enduring legacy. The stones of Schloss Radeck quietly bear witness to this rich history. Their silent stories beckon us to reflect on the passage of time and the enduring human spirit.
