Have you ever wondered about the secrets held within ancient walls? Schloss Mickeln in Dusseldorf stands before you a testament to history and resilience. Built in 1843 it replaced a much older Haus Mickeln dating back to 1210. That original building was tragically destroyed by fire in 1836. Undeterred Duke Prosper Ludwig von Arenberg used insurance money to commission the renowned architect Josef Niehaus. Niehaus cleverly used engravings of 16th-century villas designed by Galeazzo Alessi as inspiration.

Schloss Mickeln’s design is remarkable. It’s a perfect square each side measuring 19.55 meters. All four sides are nearly identical a feat of architectural symmetry. Only an outside staircase on the northern side breaks this pattern. The approach to the entrance is lined with lime trees a concept dating back to 1843 when Maximilian Friedrich Weyhe designed the surrounding gardens. Some of these original trees including plane trees European beeches and two majestic Lebanon cedars still stand today. These cedars are even considered natural monuments of Dusseldorf. Imagine strolling through these historic grounds feeling the weight of centuries beneath your feet.

Schloss Mickeln is more than just a pretty face. It’s a place where history whispers its secrets. The building has served as a summer residence a conference center and now a guesthouse for the Heinrich Heine University Dusseldorf. It seamlessly blends architectural elegance with practical modern use. The building’s history is not just in its stones but also in the lives it has touched the decisions made within its walls.

Look closely at the northern facade. You’ll see an elegant outside staircase flanked by stone lions sculpted by the artist Ney. The three entrance portals a central balcony and the Duke of Arenberg’s coat of arms three golden mistletoe flowers add to its grandeur. The building’s cubic structure is completed by a triglyph-metope frieze and a flat pavilion roof. The structure itself shows the influence of late classicism. A perfect example of how the past shapes the present.

So here we stand before Schloss Mickeln. A place where history architecture and nature intertwine. It’s more than a building it’s a living story waiting to be explored. A story of fire and rebirth of careful planning and exquisite design. A story you are now part of as you explore this magnificent Schloss.
