Was if the imposing Schloss Marzoll could speak? What tales would it whisper of Renaissance grandeur and noble intrigue? Schloss Marzoll stands before you, a stately Renaissance palace in Bad Reichenhall’s Marzoll district. Its story begins in the 16th century, a time of change and upheaval. Originally a more modest two-story structure, Schloss Marzoll underwent a dramatic transformation between 1527 and 1536. The wealthy Fröschtl family, having amassed their fortune through saltworks in Reichenhall, rebuilt and expanded the schloss. They envisioned a grand palace reflecting the fashionable Italian Renaissance style. This resulted in a cubic structure adorned with four rounded corner towers, a truly novel design for Bavaria at that time. Imagine the scene as architects and craftsmen toiled, bringing the Fröschtls’ vision to life. Later additions included a gatehouse and a surrounding wall, enhancing the schloss’s grandeur and security. Over the centuries, Schloss Marzoll passed through various noble hands. From 1605 to 1798, the Barons Lasser von Lasseregg from Salzburg made their mark. They constructed additional outbuildings and commissioned lavish stucco work for the second floor’s rooms around 1750. This decorative art was created by Benedikt Zöpf, the same artist who adorned the nearby St. Valentin Church in the Rococo style. In the 19th century, the schloss underwent another stylistic shift. In 1837, Baron von Malsen, the then-owner, removed the original Renaissance domes from the corner towers. These were replaced with battlements in the Neo-Gothic style, giving the schloss the appearance it retains today. The schloss also boasts a later addition, a charming pleasure garden with a pond and pavilion, offering a tranquil retreat. From 1951 to 1991, Schloss Marzoll was home to the Barons von Ritter zu Groenesteyn. Then, the ownership transferred to the city of Bad Reichenhall, initiating a period of restoration and preservation. While the interior remains accessible only through guided tours, the courtyard welcomes visitors to experience a tangible piece of history. Although plans for an Art Deco hotel within the schloss emerged in 2007 with the sale to private investors, these have not yet come to fruition. Schloss Marzoll remains a silent sentinel, guarding its rich past and awaiting its next chapter.
