Whispers of noble gatherings and artistic spirits echo around Schloss Luisenruh. This two-story structure with its French Mansard roof offers a glimpse into a world of history and refinement. Once a cherished summer retreat, Schloss Luisenruh now serves as a private residence and workplace. It remains inaccessible to the public. Yet its story beckons us to explore its past.
In 1792, Sebastian Andreas Balthasar von Höflin, later Augsburg’s building director, built a summer house here. It was for his bride, Louise Freiin von Schnurbein. Before the Schloss, a dilapidated wooden shelter stood on this very spot. Named after Höflin’s young wife, Schloss Luisenruh became a beloved vacation spot for the family. Sadly, Louise passed away just five years after their wedding.
Höflin transformed the grounds into a park that blended into the nearby forest. Intriguingly, he erected a farm building next to the Schloss. This building was grander than the Schloss itself with a large portal and ornate details. It resembled an agricultural palace.
Höflin wasn’t just focused on aesthetics. He was also an economic innovator. In 1793, he imported Turkish corn and buckwheat. After 1800, he and his daughter Louise experimented with silk worm breeding at Schloss Luisenruh.
But there is even more to tell. From 1808, Schloss Luisenruh housed a stoneware factory. It boasted a large kiln designed in the English style. By 1810, a brick factory was added. This factory exemplified early industrial production in Bavaria.
Schloss Luisenruh enjoyed a golden age in the early 19th century. Hortense de Beauharnais, lived in Augsburg for five years. During this time, she and her son Louis Napoleon visited Schloss Luisenruh. Louis Napoleon later became Emperor Napoleon III. Family memories recall young Louis Napoleon throwing an apple through a window. Another story tells of him trembling at ghost stories.
Inside Schloss Luisenruh, you could find period furniture. Tables, display cases, dressers and beds filled the rooms.
However, time took its toll. By the 21st century, the Schloss had fallen into disrepair. The rooms were rented out to artists and performers. There was no heating and limited plumbing.
Fortunately, in 2015, an entrepreneur purchased Schloss Luisenruh. He initiated extensive renovations. The goal was to restore the Schloss to its 1813 condition. The work included restoring the main building and the farm building. The right wing of the main building was completely rebuilt. A larger park was created based on historical designs.
The meticulous restoration earned the owner the Swabian Monument Prize in 2022. It recognized his dedication to preserving this historic treasure.
Schloss Luisenruh stands as a testament to architectural beauty and entrepreneurial spirit. Its walls hold stories of love, innovation and restoration. Although its doors remain closed to the public, the Schloss whispers its stories. These echoes remind us of its vibrant past.
