Hidden amidst the whispering trees, Schloss Hammel stands as a silent witness to centuries of history. Schloss Hammel isn’t just a beautiful building. It’s a time capsule, holding within its walls tales of knights, bishops, and even a touch of Swedish mayhem. Schloss Hammel’s story begins long before the current structure graced this hill. Archaeological evidence whispers of continuous settlement dating back to the Bronze Age. A bronze dagger, now residing in the Römermuseum in Augsburg, hints at life here during the Early Bronze Age. Imagine a hilltop fort, home to the “de Hamel” knights, loyal servants of the Bishop of Augsburg. This fort, mentioned in old chronicles, was a pawn in power struggles, repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt by the Augsburgers. The very ground we stand on was once part of a monastery. Around 1160, Bishop Konrad von Hirscheck relocated an Augustinian monastery here. However, its stay was brief. By 1167, the monks had moved on to Augsburg. The land then reverted back to the bishopric and eventually became the site of Schloss Hammel. The schloss you see today owes its existence to Wolfgang Paller. Around 1550, he constructed a new Schloss Hammel, incorporating a 12th-century chapel from the former monastery. This chapel, with its sturdy walls and vaulted ceiling, still exists within the schloss. It served as a place of Catholic worship until 1843. Schloss Hammel has known its share of turmoil. During the Thirty Years’ War, likely in 1646, Swedish forces ravaged the structure. Yet, like a phoenix from the ashes, it rose again, rebuilt in 1687. The von Stetten family, the current owners, acquired the property in the 18th century through marriage. Paul von Stetten wed Anna Maria Barbara Egger, daughter of Raimund Egger, a co-owner of Schloss Hammel. The von Stettens have been the guardians of this historic site for over 250 years. Take a moment to appreciate the avenue of maple trees leading to the schloss. Notice the square gatehouse, proudly displaying the von Stetten coat of arms. And don’t miss the southeast tower of the Schloss wall. This “Malakoff Tower” is a peculiar nod to the Crimean War, commemorating the famous battle at the Malakoff Fortress. Schloss Hammel, more than just bricks and mortar, stands as a testament to resilience, a place where echoes of the past whisper secrets to those who listen closely.
