Upon this hill stands Schloss Hainhofen a testament to centuries of history. Its imposing presence commands attention. This magnificent complex isn’t just one building. It’s two. There’s the classicist Langschloss and the baroque Hochschloss.

Let’s journey back to 1582. Anton Fugger the renowned banker and businessman acquired Hainhofen and its original water castle. He dramatically reshaped the estate. He transformed it into the impressive Renaissance-style structure we see today. He even commissioned a chapel a testament to his faith. However his ownership was short-lived. He sold it just 19 years later.

The Hochschloss’s current look dates back to around 1730. The original features were altered. Erkers were removed. The roofline was changed. A new western addition was built. This houses a grand staircase. It also includes an ornate upper-floor hall. This underwent extensive renovations. The owners were later awarded a prestigious preservation prize in 2013 for their meticulous restoration work. The Langschloss has its own distinct charm. Built in the late 18th century its simpler elegance contrasts beautifully with the Hochschloss’s grandeur. A connecting structure unites these contrasting architectural styles. This subtle addition created a harmonious flow between the two sections of the castle. The crest of the builders Joseph Karl Freiherr von Rehlingen and his wife Franziska Gräflin von Welsperg-Primör graces the gable above the western entrance. A small chapel was added in 1854. This is a hidden gem within the complex.

The castle’s history continued to unfold. After passing through various hands including a period of use by the Arbeiterwohlfahrt and even housing refugees it eventually ended up in private ownership in 1970. For a time it was leased to the Knights Templar. Later it housed the Bhagwan sect. The castle’s future looked uncertain. It fell into a state of disrepair. Then came the extensive and admirable renovation work. The current owners have successfully breathed new life into this remarkable building.
