Did you know that Schloss Glanegg near Grödig boasts a history stretching back to around 1350? This magnificent castle perched on a wooded hill is more than just a pretty picture. It has witnessed centuries of history. It was originally a three-story rectangular building with a steep hipped roof. Imagine its imposing presence then. The roof was significantly altered in 1920.

Schloss Glanegg served as an important archiepiscopal seat. For a long time it housed a court of jurisdiction. This court held sway over settlements on both sides of the Salzach River. The castle’s location was strategically important. It controlled the access to a pass. The pass was vital for trade and to prevent smuggling.

Archbishop Leonhard von Keutschach played a key role in Schloss Glanegg’s history. He oversaw much-needed renovations. This work saved the crumbling structure. It gave the castle the form of an inhabited tower castle. This style became quite common in the Salzburg province. Think of other similar castles like those near Fuschl and Goldenstein.

Notable visitors graced Schloss Glanegg’s halls. In 1574 Duke Wilhelm V of Cleve made a stop here. Later during the reign of Archbishop Markus Sittikus the castle underwent further restoration. The Archbishop’s coat of arms remains visible above the entrance.

Later Schloss Glanegg played a crucial role in Salzburg’s defenses. Under Paris Lodron the castle became part of a defensive system. The system protected Salzburg’s hinterland. A wall was built towards the Untersberg to secure the Glanegg pass.

Throughout the years Schloss Glanegg changed hands many times. It was even offered for sale to the Elector Ferdinand Grand Duke of Tuscany in 1804. The castle’s ownership eventually landed with the Mayr-Melnhof family in 1896. Today it remains a private residence. Unfortunately it is not open to the public. However the story of Schloss Glanegg continues to captivate visitors and locals alike. The castle stands as a testament to the rich history of this region. Its majestic presence reminds us of a bygone era.
