A glimpse into the past whispers from Schloss Gailenbach. Before us stands this magnificent structure a testament to centuries of history. Schloss Gailenbach nestled in Edenbergen near Augsburg boasts a rich heritage. Its story begins in the late 16th century. Zacharias Geizkofler a prominent Augsburg patrician and Reichspfennigmeister of the Holy Roman Empire commissioned its construction around 1592. He acquired the land for 16000 Gulden. The initial building project cost around 6000 Gulden. It included a small castle an armory an economic building a brewery and gardens.
The castle’s design is truly intriguing. Initially a two-story gabled roof building it underwent significant alterations in 1816/17. Its mansard roof replaced the original gabled roof with battlements. The formal gardens transformed into a picturesque landscape park. Further restoration in 1955/56 returned the roofline to its original style a gabled roof with stepped gables. Today the Schloss displays a captivating yellow facade and green shutters.
Ownership of Schloss Gailenbach changed hands many times. After Zacharias’s son Ferdinand sold it in 1622 the Koch family held it for generations. Later ownership passed through the von Paris family. A brief period in the 19th century saw the Protestant Institute St Anna of Augsburg acquire the property before it was resold. The Augsburg Congregation of Franciscan Sisters of Maria Stern took over the associated farmstead in 1927. They left in the early 1980s. Both the castle and the farmstead now belong to private owners.
Schloss Gailenbach and its surrounding farmstead form a three-winged complex. The main residential building shows its 17th century origins. It was modified in the 18th century. The economic buildings and north wing also date back to the 17th century experiencing later changes. A round arched gate adorned with decorative plasterwork connects the castle and the courtyard. A historic linden tree stands southeast of the complex designated a natural monument. The site is also a protected archeological site. Remains from the early modern period have been found.
