Built in 1855 Schloss Dahlwitz stands proudly. It’s a late-classical style schloss. The Berliner architect Friedrich Hitzig designed it. He built it for Carl Heinrich von Treskow-Friedrichsfelde. Carl Heinrich was a landowner. He also founded the Hoppegarten racetrack. Schloss Dahlwitz wasn’t just a grand home. It was part of a much larger estate. The estate covered 1524 hectares. 758 hectares were forest. Quite impressive even by today’s standards.
Imagine the life of the Treskow family. They lived within Schloss Dahlwitz’s walls. They enjoyed the beautiful landscape gardens. Peter Joseph Lenné designed those gardens in 1821. The gardens predate Schloss Dahlwitz itself. The original design was later altered. Additions were built. One addition contained an artist’s studio.
Schloss Dahlwitz changed hands and use over time. After World War II it became a kindergarten. Much of its original ornamentation was removed. The interior was stripped bare. The tower even received new windows. This lasted until 1997. A planned privatization attempt failed. In 2004 the Brandenburgische Schlösser GmbH took over. They undertook extensive and costly renovations. They restored the building’s original red paint. They also reinstated its exterior detailing.
The restoration of Schloss Dahlwitz was not easy. A fundraising association was established. Significant public funds supported the project. In 2019 a private buyer acquired Schloss Dahlwitz. Their plans include creating apartments. They will also build a space for smaller events. Schloss Dahlwitz remains a vital part of the community. It still hosts an annual summer festival. This beautiful building’s story continues to unfold. It is a testament to architectural skill and resilience. Schloss Dahlwitz is a true treasure of Brandenburg.
