Did Prince William ever imagine, gazing upon his nascent Schloss Babelsberg in 1833, that it would one day become a jewel in a UNESCO World Heritage crown? Schloss Babelsberg, here in Potsdam, was initially a modest neo-Gothic summer retreat. Prince William, later Emperor Wilhelm I, commissioned the renowned Karl Friedrich Schinkel to design this picturesque escape. Schinkel, drawing inspiration from English Tudor architecture, created a masterpiece. Schloss Babelsberg stands as one of the earliest examples of neo-Gothic architecture on the continent. The palace evolved over time, expanding beyond its initial design. After Schinkel’s death in 1841, Ludwig Persius and Johann Heinrich Strack continued the work, completing the palace in 1849. Imagine Empress Augusta, Wilhelm’s wife, strolling through the meticulously landscaped gardens designed by Peter Joseph Lenné. These very gardens, stretching over 124 acres, now form part of the larger Babelsberg Park. Within the palace walls, stories unfolded. In 1862, a pivotal moment in German history occurred at Schloss Babelsberg. It was here that King William I appointed Otto von Bismarck as Minister President of Prussia.
