Originally known as Schloss Bürglstein, it passed through various hands, each leaving their mark. From the lords of Keutzl to the Archbishop Johann Ernst von Thun, the castle witnessed changing tides of power and influence. In 1695, it even housed a nunnery of Ursuline Sisters, their presence a stark contrast to the earlier occupants. However, their stay was short-lived, lasting a mere three years before they relocated.
The late 18th century brought about a period of transformation for Schloss Arenberg. Gardener Sebastian Rosenegger, after purchasing the estate, embarked on creating a magnificent park. It was during this time, in 1792, that a fascinating discovery was made – a large Roman cemetery hidden beneath the ground, its secrets whispering tales of a distant past. The park, with its newfound historical significance, became a cherished destination for locals and dignitaries alike.
Through fires and reconstructions, the castle endured. In 1861, it found its way into the hands of Princess Sophie of Arenberg, from whom it inherited its current name. She expanded the structure, linking two three-story buildings with a central tower. Years later, from 1912 to 1922, Schloss Arenberg served as a haven for the renowned writer Hermann Bahr and his wife, the opera singer Anna Bahr-Mildenburg.
