A weathered stone whispers tales of centuries. This is the Schlosskirche Bodelschwingh in Dortmund. It stands before you a testament to faith and resilience. This isn’t just any church. It’s a living history book. Its stones hold the echoes of prayers whispered for over seven centuries.

The Schlosskirche Bodelschwingh’s origins stretch back to 1312. Ritter Giselbert von Bodelschwingh a man of considerable means founded it. Ten years later in 1322 the church was consecrated a momentous occasion. But the story doesn’t begin there. Archaeological digs in 2001 unearthed a surprising secret. Beneath the current structure lay the remnants of an earlier church. This smaller structure predates Giselbert’s foundation. It was a simple rectangular building likely dating back to the Romanesque period. This means the church we see today is actually a layered history.

Giselbert didn’t build a whole new church. Instead he expanded an existing one. He added the impressive Gothic choir around 1350. This was more than just an architectural addition. It also served as a family crypt a final resting place for generations of Bodelschwinghs. The current church has many graves of the Bodelschwingh family. Even today their descendants are still closely connected to this place. Their family history is deeply entwined with the history of this church.

The church has been significantly altered throughout history. The distinctive west tower with its octagonal spire and the main roof date from the late 17th century. This period followed destruction during a war. The restoration work then used materials and techniques that were not ideal. This caused further damage. By the early 2000s significant restoration was needed. The colorful woodworm a type of beetle was slowly destroying the wooden parts of the church. Extensive repairs were undertaken in the early 2000s and finished by the end of the 2010s. The church has been carefully restored. It is still a beautiful and functional place of worship.
