Beneath our feet lies more than just a path. It is the Schleusenbrücke Anderten a structure steeped in history. This bridge is part of the larger narrative of the Anderten Lock. It is a vital component of the Mittelland Canal.

The Schleusenbrücke Anderten stands as a testament to engineering and historical preservation. The bridge and the lock have been under monumental protection for years. It is not just a crossing but a landmark. The structure is recognized for its historical and architectural value.

The story of the Schleusenbrücke Anderten is intertwined with the Anderten Lock. In May 2016, the first major renovation of the Anderten Lock began. The lock was built in 1928. Before the current name it was once called the Hindenburg Lock. The Schleusenbrücke Anderten felt the impact of these renovations.

ALLSAT, a surveying company monitored the bridge’s structural integrity during the renovation. They tracked any shifts in the bridge’s five arches. This ensured the structure remained sound. The Schleusenbrücke Anderten successfully weathered the construction. It was officially cleared for public use in early 2020.

The Anderten Lock itself is a marvel. It facilitates the passage of over 17000 vessels each year. This lock operates around the clock. The lock’s importance to inland navigation is immense.

The lock has two chambers measuring 225 meters by 12 meters. The upper gate is a flap gate weighing about 20 tons. The lower gate is a lifting gate weighing around 80 tons. The lifting or sinking speed is one meter per minute. The entire locking process takes about 25 minutes including entry and exit. Approximately 12000 lockings occur each year.

The Mittelland Canal reaches the Elbe since 1938. This connection was a major milestone. The canal’s completion enhanced transportation capabilities.

The Schleusenbrücke Anderten offers more than just a route across the canal. It provides a vantage point. From here one can appreciate the mechanics of the Anderten Lock. You can observe vessels being raised and lowered. The bridge allows us to witness the ongoing story of this waterway. It connects industry and history. It is a reminder of Hanover’s vital role in Germany’s transport network.
